Burda Wednesday: August 1959, part II

Hello everybody.

I am a morning-person. 
As soon as I open my eyes, I'm ready to go, work, talk.. but there are some things that I like doing before I go to bed (since I have to get up really early, 'cause my job starts at 07.00 in the morning)
One thing I got into the habit of doing when I was a very little (in the kindergarten!) was choosing then next day's outfit the night before. It's something I do even now that I'm grown, because it's a good habit and it's saving precious time on mornings - so that I can have a calm breakfast. :)

Here's a step-by-step on how I prep my wardrobe at the evening (there's only tree steps):
1. Set it all out, including accessories.
2. Hang your pre-selected clothes on a hanger, give it a good look - make everything coordinate.
3. Check everything in advance (zippers, buttons, search for possible stains and tears) to make sure it all comes together without last-minute surprises.
...and have a good night's sleep, because there's less stress in the morning (at least, when it comes to "what to wear" part of my life).

Love Story: Roadmap to Romance and Marriage Mistakes

Hello everybody

Before we step into autumn and wrap ourselves into warmer garments, let's enjoy this amazing sunny morning, that is a good sign of a hot day - maybe the last one of it's kind in this season. Over here, today is know as the The Dormition of the Mother of God - celebrating the Holy Virgin. On this day, back in the days of my fore-fathers, there was a saying: "If the Dorminion was a sunny day - the vine will flow" (meaning: the autumn will be nice and the harvest will be good).
This is "the advice" our old folks used, as a guidance of what to expect in the coming days. Their lives depended on what the harvest was like. A good harvest could not only give safety in winter, but some of the produce could get sold away and that is a joy for every homestead! :)

More on the kitchen front

Hello everybody

NEWS: the builders are IN, and we are re-building it: my second kitchen. I own a home built well before 1945, and I am fortunate enough to have an entire room attached to the primary house, but with it's own entrance. 

So, you will forgive me for being
all about kitchen these days:

Every kitchen needs a pantry.
My goal is to strive for in pantry design is "at a glance visibility". Everything stored should be immediately visible. Before the area of microwave meals and processed cuisine,a well-stocked pantry was required for good domestic management. MY second kitchen was a large room, and we've made a wall,installed a door and I will have a walk-in pantry! 

I have a massive pantry-envy, and she's such an inspiration
(this is what I'm looking for!)

A walk-in pantry is usually a small room, essentially a closet for storing food, separate from but adjacent to the kitchen, called a "larder" in the old days. It might not be as functional for most of the modern-day families, it's not meant for those folks who go to and do their daily food shopping. The walk-in pantry is designed and made to store all the produce from our garden: canned vegetables and preserves; cured bacon and  dry-cured ham hanging from the ceiling, large batches of fruit stored over winter and kitchen appliances, large cooking  pots, pans.. and so on.
There are many, many lists that tell us what should we store in our pantry, called "essentials" - but I take them with caution, because, for one, I will never stock on soy-sauce or canned beans, since I am allergic to both of those products. I would also get much less "pasta", and much more flour, since I make my own. 
(And, then there are the "hanging" items: you don't see a whole pig's rib, lines and lines of home-made sausages, couple of dry cured hams and a whole chunk bacon on many pantry "essentials" lists, do you?
That is why planning our larder is an individual adventure. And, I am looking forward to it!

Burda Wednesday: August 1959, part I

Hello everybody

I'm running a bit late with this edition of Burda - I must say, automatic "publishing" was never a thing I remember setting-up (silly, right?! it's like saying you forget t set the alarm-clock)  :)

(this must be a great story, the beginning is promising)

Shhh - I guess this page is about "those days" in the month.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s women did not discuss their periods with their boyfriends or husbands in detail if at all.  It was considered an "unhealthy"  and improper topic of conversation.  This can be seen when the topic is mentioned in front of our fathers and grandfathers.  
Very rarely did women and girls even talk about menstruation with their girl friends. Women/girls had to rely on their mothers and sisters for the answers to any and all questions. Some mothers didn't handle the topic themselves but used very vague books written by men to brooch the subject with their daughters. Sometimes mothers just gave their daughters sanitary pads and didn't even explain them.
That's when the pamphlets and magazine stories started: at least with the written words came SOME explanation to "what is happening to me" situation. I feel for the girls who lived back in those ages, when silence was the answer.
(how did I got to blogging about menstruation?!)

Staying thirsty to become thin?! Never do that. Ever.

Hello everybody.

"Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink."
While you may go without food for 40 days, you will not survive more than a week without drinking water or some fluid. Water is the most abundant nutrient in the human body as well as the most common substance on earth.
An average adult body is 60-75% water. Water is found in every cell, tissue and organ and almost every life sustaining body process needs water to function.
When you don’t drink enough water, your body may trigger a signs of thirst. Although thirst signals the need to drink water, you actually need water long before you become thirsty. This is especially important for seniors, children, and for anyone during illness, hot weather or strenuous physical activity. Waiting until you feel thirsty to drink, is simply not wise. It means that you’re already deficient by two or more cups of water.

The story of drinking water never gets old,
so let's take a look:

The European Food Safety Authority recommends that women should drink about 1.6 litres of fluid and men should drink about 2.0 litres of fluid per day. That's about eight glasses of 200ml each for a woman, and 10 glasses of 200ml each for a man.

I have for you five simple rules that will help you get more water into your diet. And you don't even have to buy expensive bottled water so it's great for your wallet as well as your health.
1. Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. 
This will wake you up and help your body replace any fluid lost when you were sleeping. It'll also give you a head-start on your 2 liters.
2. Carry a small bottle of water around with you. 
This will not only remind you to drink more but it's also an easy way of keeping track of how much you're drinking. If you fill it up from the tap you can reuse it as well - brilliant for the environment!
3. Add some flavor.
If you really can't stand the taste of water on its own try adding a small amount of fruit juice, sugar-free squash or a squeeze of lemon or lime. The lemon can even help with weight loss. This is because its sour taste helps your liver get rid of toxins. 
4. Set an alarm. 
If you've got a watch that beeps on the hour it can be a good reminder. Every hour fill up a glass of water, or drink from your bottle, and make sure you finish the glass before the next hour. You could even set a reminder on your computer at work, or on your phone.
5. Eat water-rich foods.
This table shows you which foods have the highest level of water in them. This can also help you get your five-a-day (fruits & vegetables, that is!).

Water is life.
