BURDA Wednesday - November 1956, part I - and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hello everyone.

You know I'd never miss out a Burda-post; but since today is quite a day - let me first go ahead and give you all a great snow-covered hug and a lovely season-suitable poem:

As this year is ending, I wish that the New Year turns out to be a very special one for you filling each day with peak of health, abundance of happiness and sunshine, bountiful luxury and prosperity and Zen like serenity.


Now, let's talk fashion! :)

Right from the start - completely New Look.

I was never a rgeat fan of super-high and tight no-collar upper bodices,
but this green one seems suitable,
Also, the dark blue dress is a perfect office-attire.

there was the Little Woolen one.

An odd-ball or two:
a pair of waist-fitted coats,
embelished by embroidery.

I like the subtle detailes on this page.

all created with much taste, to make a dress just a bit more.. dazzling.

Shapeless suit - that is how I call this
Unfortunately, those do not fit me well.

Again, pay attention on details.
It's not just the suite we're looking at,
but the slight aditions to it - a crease, a pleat...

Times of restrictions, rationing and saving are gone with this one. If you are paying attention to old newspaper articles, ads and informations - back in WWII people were encouraged to "make, do and mend"; they were making women's suits out of men's ones; they were recreating, borrowing, making girls dresses out of mom's old sweater... And, right here, on these two pages, it is all gone.
How, you ask me?
To make a circle-skirt one uses massive amount of material. No one back in WWII would dare to do so, no one who's rationinig could manage to make a skirt like that with what they've had in their ration-book. So, there it is; such a gentile and subtle way of telling history.

Out with the old, in with the.. old way of life?! A high time to give back with a smile!


It's been a while since I have some time to think serious thoughts.. and every time the year comes to an end, I look back and reflect on how it was for me: was I doing good, have I done something selfless, is there a way to be better?....
Today, it's a post about my way of life, how I've learned it from my grandfather.

Being humble, what does it mean?!

Humility is not something that comes naturally to most, especially in today’s busy competitive society. Everyday, people see others taking advantage of a situation trying to get ahead or make themselves look good and it really doesn’t do anything for them.
A humble person is someone who does not boast or try to impress themselves on you. They are generally quiet, meek and typically not self serving. This is a good set of attributes to be seen but is a very difficult trait to be known for since being humble involves so many behaviors in our lives and is really the opposite of the way most people are living their lives.

50 ways to be humble

1. Use the response “It’s My Pleasure” when someone thanks you for doing something.
2. Use the response “I’d be honored” when someone asks you to help them or do something with them.
3. Listen more than you talk
4. Count to 3 before adding to a conversation to ensure the other person is done
5. Be willing to follow another person in conversation even if you don’t get to talk about your idea
6. Always offer to improve someone else’s idea and give them credit
7. Give credit for other’s ideas that you are carrying through on
8. Ask others for the opinion of others
9. Ask others to join conversations and contribute
10. Give a Humble Gift
11. It’s OK to be wrong and so admit it
12. Admit when you don’t understand or know something
13. Appreciate others who learn something quickly and say so

Try out one of these, then, when you get used to it, add up another one, than another one.. and soon, the day will come, when you will fully embrace the calm nature, gracefulness and poise.
These little daily things might sound like nothing much; but they are life-changing. And it is not only your life I'm thinking of. Even when we pay no attention, we're affecting others. "Every day we move people" - this is what I was told by my grandpa "..and make sure to move them in the right direction", he added.

A friend in need is a friend indeed! ;)
(sure: this too is a way to show grateness - helping where help is needed)

Since it is a high time for giving things, and since on this blog in the last couple of days I have encouraged you to make your presents personal, and make them by your own hand.. I have decided to give you a "hand"-made gift; a usefull and yet vintage-looking item we all need to have in our homes

A calendar is a mighty thing. Not only does it remind us of what comes our way, remids us of our friends' birthdays (and bills that need to be sorted out)...
Calendar is a also important for yet another thig: when flipping my calendar, I focus most on gratefulness. I am thankful for experiences that fill my heart and thrill my mind and opportunities to gracefully touch others’ lives. Looking back at dates and the way I've marked them truly gives me the ability to ghasp the entire year - and remember the glorious moments it had.

Homemade holiday: the Lampshade.

Hello everybody.

New lamshades can bring character and brightness to the most jaded looking rooms. Introducing new shades is one of the most inexpensive and exciting ways to alter the look of the whole house, and you'll get the extra pleasure from the new effect if you have made the shade yourself.

But, don't stop there - I bet these would be a great New Year's gift.

A bit more on choosing the proper (perfect) one:

When choosing the perfect light shades for your space, it’s important to know what’s out there. If you have a gorgeous chandelier in your foyer, you’ll need several chandelier shades — the number will depend on how many lights you need to cover. A drum shade is a wonderful option for a pendant light, and drum shades can have a traditional, contemporary or modern flair. Glass light shades can add interest to your lighting while allowing maximum illumination. Don’t forget to consider translucency, colors, patterns and accents as well. A pleated lampshade adds to a traditional look, while bold colors and patterns can complement an eclectic, a modern or even a contemporary room
A lampshade that’s too big or too small can make your table or floor lamp look awkward. Look for one that’s just the right size and shape for your base and, if it’s a table lamp, the table it will sit on. Don’t forget to leave space inside of the shade, as a hot lightbulb that’s too close to a fabric shade could present a fire hazard.
Height: For table lamps, look for light shades that are approximately two-thirds the height of your base. This will ensure that your finished lamp won’t look unbalanced. For both table and floor lamps, keep in mind that the lampshade should cover the bulb and the wire frame around the bulb.
Width: The widest part of your lampshade needs to be at least a half inch wider than the widest point of the base — on both sides. Don’t forget to consider the space around your lamp, though. If you choose a large lampshade, will it fit on the table, or will it be in the way of foot traffic?
Shape: It’s generally best for lampshades to mimic their bases. So, a round base will look best paired with a round shade, and square or angular bases will look best with square or rectangular lampshades. However, if your square lamp base will be sitting on a round table, you can mimic the shape of the tabletop with a round lampshade

Love Story: Take time for love

Hello everybody!

If you have had fun this Christmas - I'm ever so glad for you. I hope you didn't have any (ehmm) problems after many slices of cake that you must have consumed - I know I have those problems every single year- Because I love that "one more slice" moment. It's that time of year, I suppose.

It's a cold and foggy morning over here, the temperature s low, the ground has frozen - and I must say: I'm glad it is like this. Not only that this increases our chances of having a snow-covered New Year's eve, but much more than that: the Nature needs it.
All the delicate-looking early spring flowers will not come come out next year, if the Winter tricks them; and if the warmth of the air surrounds the ground they might think it's time to rise.. and it is not yet their time to shine. So - my garden is sleeping.


What it is time for right now, is a love story.

Let there be peace at your dinner table.

Hello everybody.

Few days ago I've started a post about dinner party manners. Over there we have learned some tricks that every hostess needs to know in order to treat her guests right; and in order to make a dinner party into a success story.
Today, allow me to adress the scariest of all: the table setting.

As with many things on this blog, will are calling Emiliy Post to assist us on this. So, we are againg reaching out to her book "Etiquette in society, in business, in politics and at home"
She writes:
Everything on the table must be geometrically spaced; the centerpiece in the actual center, the "places" at equal distances, and all utensils balanced; beyond this one rule you may set your table as you choose.

General Table Setting Guidelines

The lower edges of the utensils should be aligned with the bottom rim of the plate, about two centimeters up from the edge of the table. To avoid hiding a utensil under the rim of a plate or bowl, lay it approximately two centimeters away from the plate's side. To eliminate fingerprints on the handle, hold flatware by the "waist," the area between the handle and the eating end of the utensil.
Elbow room requires a minimum of 35 centimeters between place settings, or approximately 60 centimeteres from the center of one place setting to the middle of the next.
Butter should be waiting on butter plates, the glasses filled with water, and the wine ready to be served before the guests are seated. The water glass should be placed approximately two centimeters from the tip of the dinner knife.
Place knives with blades facing the plate.
Do not place over three pieces of flatware on either side of the plate at one time (except forks if an oyster fork is used). When an uneven number of people are seated, the odd-numbered place settings are laid opposite the middle of the even-numbered place settings.

The Formal Table Setting

To avoid clutter, the general rule for a any table setting is to include no more than three utensils on either side of the dinner plate at a time. The exception is the oyster (or seafood) fork, which may be placed to the right of the last spoon even when it is the fourth utensil to the right of the plate. The initial table setting for a typical formal dinner should look something like this:

Service Plate. Place the service plate in the center of the place setting.
Butter Plate. A small bread plate is placed above the forks, above and to the left of the service plate.
Water Glass. The water goblet is placed above each guest's dinner knife. The other glasses are then arranged around the water glass as follows:
Champagne Glass. A champagne flute may be located between the water glass and the wine glasses.
Red Wine Glass. Red wine glasses have a wider globe and may be cupped in the palm of your hand if you choose.
White Wine Glass. The glass with the longer stem and cylindrical globe is the white wine glass.  White wine glasses should only be held by the stem.
Sherry Glass. A small sherry glass may also be present to the right of the wine glasses.  This may signal that sherry will be served with the soup course.
Salad Fork. Directly to the plate's left. Two centimeters from the plate.
Dinner Fork. Left of the salad fork.
Fish Fork. On the dinner fork's left.
Dinner Knife. (Or meat knife if meat will be served.) Directly to the right of the plate. Two centimeters from the plate.
Fish Knife. On the dinner knife's right.
Butter Knife. On the butter plate, diagonally with the handle toward the guest.
Soup Spoon and/or Fruit Spoon. Right of the knives.
Oyster Fork. If present, on the right of the soup (or fruit) spoon.
Also known as the seafood fork.
The only fork placed on the right side of the place setting.
The fork tines are placed in the bowl of the soup spoon with the handle at a 45-degree angle.
It may also be laid next to the soup spoon in a parallel position.
Dessert Spoons and Forks.
A dessert fork and/or spoon may be placed horizontally above the dinner plate.
These utensils may also be provided when dessert is served.
Salt and Pepper.
Salt Shaker. The salt shaker is placed to the right of the pepper shaker.
Pepper Shaker. The pepper shaker is to the left of the salt shaker, and is angled slightly above the salt shaker.
Salt and Pepper Shakers. They are placed above the cover or between two place settings.
Salt Cellars. At formal affairs, salt is always applied from a salt cellar, a method that provides controlled use of salt. A small spoon is presented in the salt cellar and used to sprinkle salt over food.
Finger Bowls.
Finger bowls may be placed on the table at the end of the meal.

The Informal Table Setting

Depending upon the occasion, you may want to use a "formal" table setting or an "informal" table setting. For most of us, the need to set a truly formal table is almost nonexistent. With this in mind, I'll show you an informal table setting - appropriate for most occasions:

Much more simple than the "formal" one
and much more suitable for a house-parties
of today's folks.

Although a formal dinner requires either a tablecloth, at informal dinners a tablecloth is optional. A bare table with place mats is the alternative
Flowers or bowls of fruit work well as a centerpiece. Make sure the centerpiece doesn't stand so tall that guests can't see over it.
Candles, if meant to be merely ornamental, are placed on either side of the centerpiece. Or, place one candle above each place setting if they will be used as the only source of light.

My dear friends, if this scares you, rest assured: no true friend of yours should mind even if you invite them over for a quick snack and serve your food in plastic containers. A true friend leaves his/hers judgement outside once entering your home.

Now, my dear friends - it is high time we go back in time to finish off the October issue of Burda magazine, The year is 1956, and we are learning history:

Tips & tricks

OK, time for a little bit of history. :)
As you can see from above, there's a word-game going on. The thing is: back in the beginning of 20th century, my people have taken on many words from different languages. Unlike the original form of words, my folks have accepted the words as they've heard them - and as in this example, we are stuck with some amazing words like:
1. "amfort" gate - it's original form is: "einfahrt", and it means "driveway" 
2. "amrela" - you can guess this one, it's how our "vintage" posh people said "umbrella" 
and so many more..
